Trish Burgess, MD

Director of Global Health Outreach, the short-term mission’s ministry of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. She worked as a fire fighter in Athens Georgia for 2 years before going to medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. Her residency was done in Emergency Medicine at University of Missouri in Kansas City. She worked as an Emergency Medicine physician primarily in Athens Georgia for 23 years and traveled on short-terms missions with Global Health Outreach (GHO) for 10 years before leaving her clinical practice to become the Director of GHO. She has written and published several articles and speaks about her experiences on missions and work in human trafficking.  She serves on the Christian Medical & Dental Associations Human Trafficking Commission. She has traveled all over the world on short-term missions with GHO.

Grand Rounds: The Challenges of Medical Teams Working Across Cultures

This talk will define standards of excellence in short-term missions. We will discuss the ways in which healthcare can hurt on our missions and the various challenges of providing health care across different cultures. We will discuss the importance of maintaining pharmacovigilance on our teams. We will take a look at the impact of poverty on health.  We will discuss different world views and how we can learn to better communicate with other cultures. We will discuss the impact of these issues on the migrant, immigrant and refugee.

Objectives:

  1. Define standards of excellence for short-term missions.
  2. Review how healthcare can hurt.
  3. Discuss various cross-cultural challenges in serving across cultures.
  4. Review ways to maintain pharmacovigilance.
  5. Discuss the impact of poverty on health.
  6. Learn about the different worldviews and how to communicate more effectively.
